Del Rio Preview pt ii
Back in April Sarah Wilson and I made a road trip to Del Rio, Queen of the Rio Grande. It’s a border town most people in Texas have never visited, a place whose charms are mostly hidden from passersby. San Felipe Springs is this Queen’s crown jewel—40 million gallons a day of beautiful desert water that is still Del Rio’s only drinking supply.
I was lucky to spend a little time with Xochitl Abrego and Jacky Jimenez, two Del Rioans who love San Felipe Springs. Sadly these springs are threatened by a proposed pumping project to move water to San Antonio.
What will happen in Del Rio is anyone’s guess, and is the subject of our upcoming portrait series of the Edwards Plateau.
